Costco Photograph Middle review: Prices

Costco photo books
Our 30-page eleven.5 x 8.75-inch hardcover book cost $xix.99. The just other photograph books that Costco offers is an 8 ten viii-inch softcover (a 2-pack for $19.99) and a 12 ten 12-inch layflat hardcover book for $39.99.

Costco photograph calendars
Our 8.5 x eleven-inch calendar cost $9.99. An 11.v x xiv-inch calendar costs $19.99.

Costco photo cards
Each 5 x vii-inch card costs 66 cents and includes a return accost printed on the envelope. At that place'due south no discount for volume. The only other cards available are only one-sided photo prints on flimsy traditional photograph paper, for 28 cents each for the starting time 50 cards. Then the price goes down to 21 cents each in packs of 25.

Incidentally, Costco has airtight all of its in-store photo centers, so anything you order volition accept to be delivered to your home.

Costco Photograph Eye review: Software

Costco's book-creation software is at best but okay, simply its calendar and card interfaces are severely restrictive. The book interface is generally flexible, providing opportunities for personal inventiveness. The templates and layouts are fully editable. Costco'due south small library of clip art includes some of the near attractive we've seen. On the other mitt, though some of the backgrounds are pleasant, Costco doesn't accept the variety or quality of Printique or Mixbook. And while the fancy frames are attractive, the straight photo borders are limited to a pocket-size number of colors, only a few of which have more than one set width.

Costco's book interface has no drib shadows other than those associated with some fancy frames. In add-on, photo editing tools consist of only 2 filters (sepia and blackness & white), and you tin't span a photo beyond ii pages. Simply the virtually frustrating role was that I couldn't change the background or title font of my volume'due south spine to match the cover I designed, which resulted in an ugly overall appearance.

Costco'due south calendar interface is severely limited, offering fiddling customization or creativity. There'south no clip art or drop shadows, and the option of fonts, text colors and backgrounds is miniscule. The photo tools are only slightly better than those for the photograph book, because the calendar interface has automobile-correct and ruby-eye in addition to the two filters.

The one thing we liked about the calendar software was how easy it was to create a graphic date box event. Yous only double click a engagement to open up a sizable window where you tin can drag and driblet a photograph, move (but not zoom) the picture show inside the box to center on your subject area, and add text in any of a handful of colors or fonts.

What made the photograph card interface even more restrictive than the calendar software are the templates that are limited to specific uneditable designs. And so, if your event doesn't fit a small selection of categories (wedding ceremony and a scattering of other types of invitations, infant announcements, thank you notes and save-the-engagement), y'all may have difficulty finding a bill of fare that will fit your needs.

Decorative elements and type can't be deleted or edited. As a result, the hy faces in the photograph on the back of our card were obscured by the design graphic. The only options you take are to identify photos or type in fixed placeholders, choose among a handful of colour themes, and select square or circular corners. The photo edit tools are the aforementioned iv bachelor for calendars.

Costco Photo Center review: Print Quality

Costco Photo Center printed photo book

Costco photo books
The Costco book looks and feels cheap. The end papers are plain black newspaper, and the binding stitches are exposed in the front and back inside pages. The semi-gloss newspaper is a decent weight.

Overall photograph reproduction was pleasant and appealing, though non particularly noteworthy. Skintones on the cover were mostly warmer than our originals (though not every bit warm equally Shutterfly'due south book). The skintones on the interior pages are closer to the originals. The dynamic range of the photos on the interior was very adept (though not fantabulous) with particular throughout the shadows, midtones and highlights.

Notwithstanding, on the cover, the photos had some loss of shadow particular. Focus was very good on the cover, and for most of the pictures on the interior pages, though some of the within photos were a bit blurred on closer inspection.

Costco photo calendar
The photo quality on our Costco calendar was uneven. Some photos had decent colors; others were besides orange. Just the most noticeable issues related to inaccurate exposure in which the shadows tended to exist overpronounced, which acquired some colors to wait muddied.

Midtones and highlights were brilliant and better balanced, though. Images were acceptably sharp if you don't look also closely at the minor details. Similarly, type was okay, merely not crisp. The paper is ordinary smooth card stock of a decent weight.

Our Costco card was generally appealing though not great. The exposure rendered details in the total dynamic range, from shadows through the midtones to the highlights. However, skintones were sallow and dull.

Blazon was well-formed with make clean margins. The carte stock is non every bit thick every bit the Printique or Mixbook cards, simply information technology has a nice smooth terminate.

Costco Photo Middle review: Verdict

The i advantage that Costco's print products take over all the others is price, and for those on a tight budget that may be the determining gene in choosing your print service. The problem is that Costco's book software is limited, and the card and calendar interfaces are among the most restrictive in this roundup. And the final printed products are nothing special. The book is cheaply produced, though the photos are good. The photograph and print quality of our calendar and card is average to below average.

If you care about being able to customize your volume, agenda or cards according to your personal artistic vision, and want quality that you'll be proud of, consider Printique or Mixbook, just Costco is a good option if yous're on a upkeep. Go on in listen, though, that Mixbook often offers discounts, which brings its price more in line with Costco.
